Evaluation of RePLAY for Mainline, Shoulders, and Rumbles: Pilot Study in Clinton County

According to BioSpan Technologies, Inc., RePLAY Agricultural Oil Seal and Preservation Agent (an 80 percent biobased solution) extends the life of paved asphalt surfaces when it is applied every 3 to 5 years. A number of successful applications of RePLAY have been reported so far by case studies, not only within the United States, but across the globe.
RePLAY is claimed to have reduced lane drop time and labor owing to its ease of application and curing properties (cures within 15 to 30 minutes). By reducing moisture penetration and sealing hairline cracks, it is believed that RePLAY protects the asphalt from potholing, edge rutting, and cracking. However, limited documentation exists in terms of RePLAY construction practices and performance experience.
Some states in Iowa's vicinity have reported success with the use of RePLAY. For instance, the public works manager for the City of Hutchinson, Minnesota observed how quickly water sheds off roadways treated with RePLAY. Furthermore, it was observed that the shedding of water was done while retaining the skid resistance of a normal section of pavement. Encouraged by such anecdotal evidence, the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) is interested in evaluating this product as a fog seal material for mainlines, shoulders, and rumble strips.
The vendor is coordinating the application of the product on a county project in Clinton County, Iowa. This investigation will include a field evaluation of RePLAY on the project site over a five-year (60-month) period. If successful, the research findings will be used directly by city, county, and Iowa DOT engineers in including or considering RePLAY as one of the potential, approved fog seal materials for their pavement rehabilitation and preservation projects.
