About the research
The objective of the project is to develop an optimization-based approach to sustainable replacement, improvement and relocation of maintenance garages. The methodology will be tailored to Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) Office of Maintenance needs, with the flexibility to be adapted to support other state departments of transportation (DOTs). The specific aims of this scope of work are to (1) review the past efforts in studying maintenance garage location problems and the current practice of locating maintenance garages by Iowa DOT and other state DOTs; (2) optimize maintenance facility locations along Highway 61 corridor in the Muscatine area to meet the service target and subject to the budget constraint; and (3) refine and apply the optimization model to determine the best location for a new garage in the Dubuque area.
