About the research
This project explores the effects of platooning and self-driving technologies on the costs of truck freight relative to that of rail freight. The findings of this research can be used to provide better forecasts of the future of the freight industry. The results will help U.S. transportation companies and policy makers to gauge the long-term effects on the relative costs of providing rail versus motor carrier freight services. The results could also help guide policy makers toward more efficient infrastructure investment strategies to meet future freight needs.
