About the research
Currently less than 2 percent of the U.S. Railroad industry field workforce is comprised of women. Railroad field work has been and still is thoroughly dominated by men. While the U.S. motor carrier industry is somewhat better with closer to 5 percent women drivers, there are still significant opportunities for women in these workforces.
The main goal of this research is to determine current demographic data describing the female population and trends in the rail industry--particularly in operational, male-dominated roles. In addition, we intend to explore the reasons why women do not hold more positions within these roles and present an action plan to influence a rise in the female population within transportation field jobs, thereby addressing the overall employee decline within the industry.
