About the research

Phase II of the project will involve field-testing of alternative embankment acceptance procedures and methods for rapid field identification of the range of soil types in Iowa. Since obtaining adequate soil density often does not indicate adequate stability a procedure utilizing the Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP) will be evaluated as a means of providing an indicator of both adequate density and stability.

Based on field and laboratory testing conducted during the summer 1998 construction season, a pilot project will be selected for 1999. On this pilot project ISU personnel will train and assist Iowa DOT field personnel who will be responsible for field testing and acceptance control. This is expected to provide input to needed modifications necessary for an economical, practical, and efficient method for constructing a quality embankment.
