About the research

Extensive work on load and resistance factor design (LRFD) approaches of pile design has been completed for the Iowa Department of Transportation. While the recommended procedures provide competitive solutions to those previously established using the allowable stress design (ASD) for piles in cohesive soils, the same cannot be stated for the pile in sand sites. One approach to increase the resistant factor used in design would be deploy other LRFD methods instead of using a static design method. The objective of this project is to instrument, drive, retap and load test a pile at a sand site and also to establish a suitable design method and a corresponding resistance factor for design.
