About the research
This research is designed to build on the work completed in Phase I. In Phase I of High Friction Surface Treatment (HFST) for High Crash Locations, a methodology was developed to systematically identify a potential HFST candidate using mainline horizontal curves on primary and secondary roads based on crash experience. Through an iterative review process with the Iowa DOT Office of Traffic and Safety, and input from appropriate highway agencies (county and Iowa DOT), fourteen total curves were identified for HFST treatment in 2017. After working with all agencies involved, nine sites received the high friction surface treatment in summer 2017.
The objective of Phase II is to establish a baseline condition for all treatment sites and monitor HFST performance and basic driver behavior for a three-year period following treatment. Crash data from before and after will also be collected.
