About the research

The current implementation of the incident location tool (ILT) has easy-to-use location capture functionality that has reached a stable maturity. The current release of the ILT is implemented using Microsoft’s Visual Basic 6.0. As with any information-centered technology, new trends make older development tools and software implementations obsolete over time. The Visual Basic 6.0 development language is beginning to show its age. Products developed using it are not well positioned to fully interoperate with the next generation of Microsoft information technology products, which have a network-centered architecture focused on web-based services. With this in mind, the TraCS steering committee has determined it necessary to re-engineer a new implementation of the ILT using currently accepted software development best practices and tools.
