Fall Safety Workshops: Providing crash severity maps for districts, counties, cities in Iowa (2007-Preliminary 2017). A total of 185 maps for districts, counties, cities, MPO’s, and Law enforcements are expected to be delivered. As of 9/30/2016 96 maps are done. A total of 374 tables for crash and injury severities, major cause , and manner of collision were delivered.

Validating code change on alcohol and drug test results

Ongoing: Weekly identification of crashes occuring at various work zones.

In progress: Identify top primary road segments with respect to animal-related crashes and deer carcasses.

Sgt. Jerry Behning is participating in one of the work zone training sessions and needs crash information for his presentations.

Bob Schultz has requested some follow-up work to be done from the previous project. The geocoded file somehow became corrupted before being installed on the Polk City computer system. Improvements such as the parcels with more than one location and making the mini-manual more user friendly will be made.

The IDOT wanted crash locations for a 3-year period totaling one ore more fatal collisions, four or more injury collisions, or eight or more total collisions along the proposed Loess Hills Scenic Byway route.

Some examples showcasing the GIS capabilities of the ITSDS which could be applied to law enforcement uses were needed. A pin-map showing acohol-related and drug related crashes in relation to the proximity of a resturaunt or bar was created.

The FHWA is performing crash studies at intersection locations that are experiencing usage of the shoulder as a right-turn lane and performing crash studies.

Colorful maps, graphs, charts, tables, and illustrations were added to the text information provided by the GTSB to create a “new and improved” look to the “Iowa Crash Facts.”

Some examples showcasing the capabilities of the ITSDS which could be used in to help the authors add visual information to particular sections of the Strategic Highway Plan were presented at the SMS meeting.

Three intersections were studied to determine the percentage of broadside crashes that occurred in the last five years.

An article was written describing the services that the Iowa Traffic Safety Data Service provides. This article was published in CTRE’s “Technology News” and in the GTSB’s “Crossroads.”

Scott requested fatalities, injuries, fatal crashes, and injury crashes broken down by county for the last 10 years.

The FHWA requested maps of Boone and Story County locations where run off the road fatalities occurred. This will be used to show locations that roadside design improvement may be needed.

The Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau would like to obtain 3-year crash data for fatalities, injuries (by injury severity), and property damage only incidents. The total number of the three types is desired.

“County Profiles” are being made as one of the standard products provided by the ITSDS. These Profiles will include text such as demographics, crash information, and emergency response information as well as charts, tables, and maps with various crash data displayed.

Bob was interested in obtaining some training/assistance is using GIS-ALAS, a crash analysis software developed by the Iowa DOT and CTRE. Bob will be taking GIS-ALAS into the field to local law enforcement agencies.

Jerry was interested in obtaining crash histories for three intersection node locations to compare to their records. Crash summary reports were generated for crashes occurring in the last five years using Access-ALAS software.

Dick requested the 1997 and 1998 crash locations and data for the state of Iowa to perform some public health related analyses.

A concerned citizen was interested in obtaining any results available regarding the Intermediate Driver License law that Iowa has implemented. She also requested young driver crash information in the form of statistics and graphs.

Melvin Larsen is writing part of the Transportation Research Board Design Criteria for Low-Volume Roads and needed information to help validate some of his research on agricultural equipment accidents. He requested maps marking accident locations and crash reports summarizing the data for Shelby and Hamilton Counties.

Harold Jensen and Don Houseton are interested in crashes that occur at controlled and uncontrolled intersections of county roads.

Sgt. Baskerville wanted graphical aids for teaching his drivers education classes.  Graphics were produced, illustrating crashes categorized by injury severity that occurred in Black Hawk County and the costs associated with each crash.

On April 5th, Bob Thompson requested that maps be created for I-80, US 30, US 18, and US 71 to promote interest and inform state law enforcement officers participating in the April 7th discussion of the Corridor Enforcement Program. The maps would aid in determining the major Iowa corridors where enforcement would have the most benefit in terms of reducing injury severity. By April 6th, 22 county maps were created and 10 color copies of each were provided. The involved officers decided to go ahead with the proposed project. On May 26th, Phase I was completed and 8 ½” x 11” color maps, 36” x 44” plots, and color transparencies were created for Interstate 80, US 20, US 30, US 34, US 61, and US 71. On July 26th, Phase II was completed and items were produced for Interstate 380, Interstate 35-80, and US 71. In all, 830 maps, 99 transparencies, 9 plots, and 80 tables were created!

Joyce was interested in the number of bicycle crashes in Iowa in 1997 and 1998. She also requested the injury severity information and if the crash occurred in a rural or an urban setting.

Dan requested 10 years of crash information for locations deemed high crash location in 1993 and 1996.

Scott requested information on fatal crashes and injury crashes broken down by age and gender for the last 10 years.

Barr-Nunn Transportation Inc. was interested in the traffic counts from the interchange of IA highways 17 and 141. They were interested in the number of vehicles using the interchage to determine the crash exposure leve present at the interchange.

Henry wanted some information on the Iowa National Model. He was informed of the web page and of the project contact.

Carol was interested in obtaining information from the 2000 Crash Facts. The text-only versions of the Crash Facts were transformed into sheets including graphs, tables, and illustrations.

Ms. Hinkle was interested in information about a crash that occurred in Davenport, IA. She was directed to the Davenport Police Department.

Molly wanted to obtain the five-year crash totals for Interstate 235 to aid in the reconstruction. Five-year crash information for the corridor was obtained and broken down into three sections.

Jamie wanted to obtain the geographic locations of fatal crashes that occurred in Webster County. Three years of data was analyzed and a map was produced.

Tom Welch requested crash history for the Iowa scenic byway located in East Central Iowa to include in a DOT report. A map highlighting the crashes along the route was provided in electronic format for the report.

Kurt wanted the ITSDS to perform a crash ranking of non-illuminated intersections in Polk County to aid in determining locations that could be improved by overhead lighting. The ITSDS ranked 15 intersections by crash frequency, crash rate, and loss to determine an overall ranking and supplied the location information in tabular and map format.

Ms. Scatterfield requested information via the Iowa DOT to assist her in conducting a training course. The couse was incorporating highway safety into design. The case study selected was stretch of US Highway 52 from Sageville to Holy Cross in Dubuque C

Steve wanted to obtain the animal crash rates for the statewide primary road system. The 3-year statedwide animal crash rates were determined and mapped, illustrating the most severe crash rates.

Mr. Sinram was interested in obtaining crash information including frequency, injury severity, and rate. This information was provide and the rates were compared to the statewide average crash rate on primary highways.

Dennis wanted to learn more about the types and extent of the services provided by the Iowa Traffic Safety Data Service to local agencies. He had noticed the Service and a brief description in a DOT mailing. Dennis was told about some of the crash analysis that the Service performs and informed that there is no cost to use the Service. He was also directed to visit the ITSDS web site for more information.

Mr. Welch requested the location of the most frequently hit guardrails in the state. These locations were mapped by frequency.
